My Creative Journey: Empowering Artists, Enriching Community

San Diego Made’s My Creative Journey | Mi Viaje Creativo is an ongoing program dedicated to supporting creative entrepreneurs in our city’s Promise Zone neighborhoods. Through free workshops, speaker series, public art displays, and community events, we showcase local talent, foster collaboration, and provide opportunities for emerging artists to learn from established creatives.

Selected artists participate in a paid residency, gaining free workspace and a platform to share their creative processes, traditional art practices, and cultural heritage. This initiative not only celebrates artistic innovation but also strengthens community connections by ensuring that creative success stories are shared and accessible to all.

This program is made possible with support from the City of San Diego’s Commission for Arts and Culture, the California Arts Council, the Prebys Foundation, and the San Diego Made Factory.

Current Resident Artist: Irie Zepeda

Residency Dates: April - August 2026

Irie Zepeda (They/Them) is a Barrio Logan–based printmaker, facilitator, and multidisciplinary artist rooted in community, cultural traditions, and shared creative practices. As the founder of Por La Mano Press, they are committed to accessible, skill-sharing approaches to art-making. Working primarily in relief printmaking and immersive installations, they create community-centered gathering spaces that weave together art, music, and collective expression. Their work explores healing, memory, and intergenerational connection, using creativity as a tool for reflection, care, and shared rejoicing.

Their My Creative Journey Residency explores body and land as interconnected landscapes, tending both our inner landscape and our shared one. As a Promise Zone community, participants will reflect on our environmental realities and weave ancestral memory and care through creative workshops and a community connection fair with local land stewards, healing practitioners, and food growers.

Through these events and experiences, participants will gain insight and tools for individual and collective healing.

The residency will culminate in an immersive exhibition where community insights are shared, tools and knowledge are displayed, and participants creatively engage with the outcomes of our shared journey, celebrating collective healing through music, art, and more.

“Through the legacy of My Creative Journey, I hope to leave behind a stronger web of connection, linking people to one another, to resources, and to practices of care that can continue to grow beyond this space and time. Rooted in what already exists for us and by us, this work uplifts the knowledge and offerings within our own Promise Zone community. In strengthening our ties, we deepen our care, our awareness, and our relationship to ourselves, the land, and each other.” - Irie Zepeda
